Beltane Ritual: How Moon Witches Celebrate Beltane
/Beltane Ritual honours fertility, abundance, growth and prayers for the future ahead. It is a fire festival and as such, we honor the sacred union of the fire and earth elements.
Reconnect with nature’s magic and cycles through powerful symbols, rituals and celebrations. This article guides you to bring in more magic, mysticism and rituals in your life in an easy and fun way! Here’s how you celebrate Beltane today:
Beltane Date
Beltane ritual and ceremonies are held on May 1st. Beltane is an ancient Pagan tradition, rooted in the celtic wisdoms but celebrated worldwide as the festivity marks the midpoint between spring equinox and summer solstice.
As such, Beltane (sometimes spelled Bealtaine or Beltaine, and nowadays called Valborg in Swedish), celebrates the awakening of summer’s abundant energies.
Beltane Food
Some festivals are more associated with food than others. At the Beltane ceremony, the eating is not in focus. However, we start harvesting greens that have started to grow such as spinach, arugula, parsley, chives, and wild greens to include in our festivities.
Traditionally, we give offerings of food on the altar and Beltane food might include last year’s honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, edible flowers and anything you find growing right now.
Honey symbolises abundance, sweetness, nature’s generosity and collaboration.
With fresh and wild greens we celebrate the abundance, beauty and nourishment of Mother Earth.
What to wear to Beltane?
Living in tune with the cycles of the Moon, Sun and the Earth is the path of the Goddess. And as such, we like to dress up when we honor transits, transformations and conduct rituals.
For the Beltane ritual, I like to wear jewelry that symbolises the earth and her abundance, as well as gemstones. Usually, this time of year, the weather is warm and invites to long dresses and skirts with bare legs and feet. To Beltane, I wear no shoes as I want to connect with Mother Earth and her powers.
Beltane Goddesses
The roman goddess Flora means everything that flourishes and she is connected with goddess Pomona. She represents fertility, springtime, the vine and flowers.
Flora has a festival called Floralia that is celebrated April 28 to May 3rd and that’s why she’s sometimes associated with Bealtaine. Flora also held a rose festival on May 23rd.
Goddess Venus is my personal favorite this time of year as she is associated with apple blossoms, verbena and damiana, as well as the energy of Taurus. I work with Venus energy over Beltane and beyond. Aphrodite is sometimes called Venus, and her symbol is pure love, making her a powerful alley in Beltane ritual. Looking at the astrological cycles, this time of year is also when Venus rises as a morning star and guides us towards flourishing futures.
Older goddess stories suggest that goddess Godiva was the female symbol that complemented the phallic maypole. She was seen as the holy bride and representative of the wonderful and terrifying Freya.
Celebrate Beltane
Beltane is a much loved festival here in the North. In Sweden, the sacred fires are burnt the evening before and the holiday is called Valborg. As usual with ancient traditions, the church has taken over the holiday and adopted it to better suit their wants. But let us not forget the realness behind this powerful festival!
Since I moved to Sweden from Costa Rica in 2016, me and my husband have celebrated Beltane. If there’s one sabbath or holiday that we never miss, it’s this one!
Sometimes we gather with friends around the fires, clearing out the winter. But for the most recent years, we honor and reconnect to nature’s spirit and the goddess in easy rituals with the kids. In our family, the fire is always present as Bealtaine is a fire festival. This is where we give our prayers and offerings. We usually create an altar and sing.
It’s an easy and fun way to embody the primal energy of Beltane and weave nature’s symbolism into our family life that you can do too! Connecting with the earth and fire elements connect us to mother nature’s cycle and renew our passions and missions in life.
My more personal Beltane ritual includes working with the plants.
Always at Beltane, I open my Witchy Farm Shop of handmade oils and herbs. And I dive deep into creating oils and herbal blends for myself, my family and community. As we have a small farm, I’m also called to attend to my baby plants around the garden; weeding, seeding, nourishing for the coming harvest and creation of spiritual herbal blends. What should you do for Beltane?
In your Beltane Ritual this year, I suggest creating an altar of gemstones, and symbols that are dear to you and light a fire. A candle is also a symbol of the fire if you want to keep things simple.
If you include children in your Beltane celebrations, I suggest getting outdoors, making a fire together and giving offerings to the fire with prayers for a flourishing future.
What are the pagan traditions of May Day?
Bealtaine has its roots in Celtic folklore and is one of the most important festivals in the wheel of season. It is a celebration of joyful rituals and historically, we’ve gathered around bonfires to purify and protect what was and what’s to come.
Traditional pagan traditions for may day include jumping over fires, dancing around the fires, through smoke and flames to invite fertility and prosperity; creating a maypole adorned with seasonal flowers and greens that symbolises the sacred union and with the ribbons we weave together life’s energies- male and female.
Homes and doorways are decorated with greenery and blooming branches to welcome the abundance of summer and harvest. Important to remember is that, through ancient times, these celebrations were a way to ensure the well-being of the community, the fertility of the land and protection for the rest of the year. Let’s also honor those before us, who passed on these sacred rituals and ways of communicating with Mother Earth.
What are the Beltane blessings for May Day?
When celebrating Beltane, we have a chance to embody the powerful symbolism of fertility and abundance. In our Beltane ritual, we awaken to life’s buzzing and vibrant energy and we are part of the wheel that steadily turns toward summer.
Our Beltane Blessings for May Day honors the sacred union of earth and fire, female and male, invoking and representing growth, renewal and creativity. This is a time of unfolding potential, joy and possibility to transform our dreams into tangible action. The veil between worlds is thin, magic is strong and prayers answered.
I invite you to celebrate Beltane with me, wherever you are in the world! Let your altar become your focal point for this seasonal celebration. Offer flowers, crystals and symbols like seeds and ribbons. Decorate your sacred body with beauty such as nourishing oils, as you honor the cycles of nature.
When you join my Moon Circle and the moon letters, I’ll always let you know when I open doors to my Witchy Farm Shop. I only open doors once a year, and custom make every pre-order during this time.
